Position Summary

The Public Information Officer (PIO) for the Sheriff's Office is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of public communication, media relations, and community outreach efforts for the Sheriff's Office. The PIO will work closely with Sheriff's Office personnel, the media, community groups, and other stakeholders to promote transparency, disseminate accurate information, and enhance public understanding of the Sheriff's Office's role in the community.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position. Employee must comply with all County and department policies, procedures, WAC’s, or other regulatory bodies.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all media inquiries and requests for information from the public.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with members of the media, including print, television, and online outlets.
  • Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other communications materials.
  • Coordinate and facilitate media interviews with Sheriff's Office personnel.
  • Develop and maintain content for the Sheriff's Office website and social media platforms.
  • Plan and execute community outreach events and programs, including public meetings and educational initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office and community groups, civic organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and participate in crisis communication efforts, including emergency response and disaster management.
  • Develop and maintain a crisis communication plan and standard operating procedures for the Sheriff's Office.
  • Conduct regular media and public relations training for Sheriff's Office personnel.

Education, Experience, and Licensing

Required

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in public relations or communications, preferably in a law enforcement or government agency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people, including law enforcement personnel, community members, and members of the media.
  • Understanding of media relations and crisis communication best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media platforms.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed inside but can be performed in varying temperatures. Employee may be exposed to office supply odors or vapors. Employee may also be exposed to sub-sanitary environments.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak, and lift up to 50 lbs. of unequal weight.
